SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This FOIA request contains material related to the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut in October 1983. The Vice President's National Security Affairs files cover the Office of the Vice President's participation in White House meetings on the turmoil in Lebanon, the reaction to the bombing of the Marine barracks, and Vice President Bush's dealings with concerned Lebanese-American groups. The Vice President's Staff and Office Files deal with press briefings on the bombing in Beirut. Due to the restrictions of the Presidential Records Act and the Freedom of Information Act all decision making correspondence and memoranda have been removed, leaving approximately 400 pages of routine correspondence, press releases, and routine reports in the open file.

Please note that a "*" indicates that a collection is entirely processed and open. A more detailed description of the materials is available in the finding aid for the office or category.

Please also note that a "**" indicates files or documents that were incidentally processed as part of this FOIA request.
