SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This FOIA request contains material dealing with John G. Tower. The majority of the records relate to either the former Senator's nomination by George Bush as Secretary of Defense or his tenure as chairman of the Tower commission, which was charged with investigating the Iran-Contra affair. In the FOIA collection there is a considerable amount of correspondence from constituents regarding Bush's selection of Tower as head of the country's armed forces. By an overwhelming margin the letter writers tended to be quite critical of the President's choice of his former Congressional colleague as the right man for the job of serving as the leader of the nation's military might. Most of this material can be found in the Alphabetical and Subject Files. Other records include reports, correspondence, memoranda, testimony, and news clippings. These documents will be found largely in the Staff Office Files. Under the provisions of the Presidential Records Act the substantive portions of this FOIA request are closed. Documents open for research include routine correspondence, memoranda, and tributes and eulogies to Tower which were delivered upon his death in April 1991.
