WHORM - White House Administration (WH)

(2.8 linear feet; boxes 1-7)

A primary category containing information pertaining to the operation and administration of the White House, the Old Executive Building and other temporary offices of the President. In addition, the series contains information about Presidential transportation. The series, however, does not contain detailed information about Air Force One, Presidential limousines, or the executive residence. Perhaps the most important materials in this series are the weekly, biweekly, quarterly, and annual mail and telephone call reports. Usually initialled by the President, these reports contain statistical information about the amount of mail and number of calls received by the White House. These reports are usually broken down by "pro" and "con" by issue.

A secondary subject category containing letters and memoranda regarding White House operation in general. Topics discussed include the White House mess, the expenditure of White House entertainment funds, and the White House Endowment Fund.

WH001 Budget, White House (.1 ft.; box 1)

A secondary subject category containing letters, memoranda, and reports detailing the expenditure of White House funds for travel, entertainment, and supplies.

WH002 Buildings and Grounds, White House (.2 ft.; boxes 1-2)

A secondary subject category which consists of letters and memoranda primarily regarding the refurbishing of the Oval Office. Information in the materials details fundraising efforts for the remodeling of the President's office, as well as efforts to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the laying of the White House cornerstone. Many materials in this category were generated by the White House curator and the White House Historical Association.

WH002-01 Buildings Management, White House (.1 ft.; box 2)

A secondary subject category including letters and memoranda about White House buildings management. Letters and memoranda include information about the resurfacing of the White House tennis courts, the construction of the White House horseshoe pit, and the new recycling program within the executive mansion.

WH002-02 Furnishings, White House (.05 ft.; box 2)

A secondary subject category which contains letters and memoranda regarding the White House art collection. The materials mainly address requests from the public regarding particular items in the White House collection such as paintings or models. Many letters and memoranda in this category were generated by the White House curator.

WH002-03 Temporary Offices of the President (.05 ft.; box 2)

This secondary subject category consists primarily of letters and invitations. The bulk of this category consists of thank you letters written to the President by his friends and associates following weekend visits to Camp David, a temporary office of the President. Also included in this category are materials relating to the construction and dedication of the Camp David Chapel.

WH002-04 Tours (White House - EOB - NEOB) (.2 ft.; box 3)

A secondary subject category which contains letters and internal memoranda relating to tours of the White House. Included are letters from members of Congress requesting special "VIP" tours for constituents, as well as letters from the general public requesting information about White House tours. Internal memoranda document White House policies and procedures relating to West Wing tours and tours of the state rooms of the White House.

WH003 Contracts, White House (.1 ft.; box 3)

A secondary subject category containing memoranda primarily regarding the rules and regulations of purchasing supplies and furniture for White House offices. Also included are letters from vendors who seek White House contracts.

WH004 Office Management, White House (.4 ft.; box 4)

This secondary subject category contains correspondence primarily about mail handling and processing. The category also contains standard form letters developed in the White House as a means of answering the voluminous mail received by the President. The materials discuss the efficiency of the White House Correspondence Unit and provide general information about the operation of the correspondence unit.

WH004-01 Mail Reports, White House (.7 ft.; boxes 5-6)

This secondary subject category consists mostly of weekly, biweekly, quarterly, and annual mail reports. These reports were generated by Shirley K. Green, Special Assistant to the President for Presidential Messages and Correspondence, and were regularly forwarded to the President for information purposes. The reports contain total amounts of correspondence received during any given period, the amount processed, and the general issues discussed in the correspondence. The issues discussed are also broken down "pro" and "con" based on the President's policies. This category also includes weekly and biweekly telephone reports which outline the number of calls made to the White House, as well as the general topics discussed in each call. Most of these reports were reviewed and initialed by the President.

WH005 Personnel Management, White House (.2 ft.; box 6)

A secondary subject category which contains letters of recommendation and letters concerning federal employees detailed to the White House.

WH006 Security - Protection - Passes (White House - EOB) (.1 ft.; box 6)

A secondary subject category consisting of letters and memoranda regarding routine security issues, such as the use of cellular telephones and White House access.

WH007 Supplies - Materials - Services (.1 ft.; box 6)

A secondary subject category containing letters and memoranda which include information about White House supplies and services.

WH008 Telecommunications, White House (.1 ft.; box 7)

A secondary subject category which includes correspondence relating to the operation of the White House Comment Line, as well as about the need for additional telephone lines within the White House.

WH009 Transportation, White House (EMPTY)

WH009-01 Aircraft - Helicopter - White House (.2 ft.; box 7)

A secondary subject category which includes letters and memoranda. Letters from members of Congress and the general public request rides aboard Air Force One. Other letters and memoranda relate to the acquisition of the new Boeing 747 Air Force One and to tours of Air Force One. This category does not contain detailed, substantive information about Air Force One or Marine One.

WH009-02 Automobiles, White House (.05 ft.; box 7)

A secondary subject category which includes letters and memoranda regarding "portal to portal" transportation of senior White House staff, as well as the Presidential limousines. The category, however, does not contain detailed information about Presidential automobiles.

WH009-03 Yacht, Presidential (.05 ft.; box 7)

A secondary subject category which includes letters and memoranda relating to the former Presidential yacht Sequoia. This category documents efforts to return the yacht to the federal government.
