WHORM - Veterans Affairs (VA)

A primary subject category containing information pertaining to veteran benefits and assistance. This includes requests from individual veterans, veterans service organizations, elected officials and others directed to the Bush Administration and then transferred to the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). This category also includes information on proposed Congressional bills pertinent to DVA and limited information about specific DVA goals. Unscanned material is located at the end of each subject category.

DESCRIPTION OF SECONDARY FILE CODES

VA Veterans Affairs - General (1.0 ft.; boxes 1-3)

A subject category containing large numbers of letters from various groups, organizations, and individuals seeking to maintain or increase funding for the DVA, seek funding for specific projects, seek redress for complaints against the DVA or specific DVA facilities, protest some planned action by the DVA, seek correction of certificates issued by DVA, etc. In this category, the most voluminous group of letters are those concerning funding for medical facilities and medical procedures. Also included are statements by DVA and other Administration agencies pertaining to legislation related to DVA.

VA001 Compensation, Pensions - Veterans (.28 ft.; boxes 3-4)

A secondary category containing information relating to veterans' pensions, benefits to specific veterans' groups, and signing statements and departmental drafts for various bills related to DVA.

VA002 Educational Programs - Veterans (.04 ft.; box 4)

A secondary category exclusively limited to material related to educational programs for veterans. This includes a signing statement and departmental drafts for the Montgomery G.I. Bill and letters related to the efforts to have veterans' education benefits clarified and/or extended.

VA003 Hospitalization, Rehabilitation (.28 ft.; box 4)

A secondary subject category primarily containing information about funding for DVA medical facilities, construction of new DVA medical facilities, closure of certain DVA medical facilities, complaints against and praise for DVA medical facilities and personnel, and protests against non-veterans using DVA medical facilities. Also included is information about the use of DVA medical facilities during the Gulf War and a proposed monitoring service for veterans.
