A primary category containing information pertaining to Education and Educational Institutions (Schools, Colleges, Universities) both Public and Private, including the Requirements, Standards, Training Programs, Facilities, Staff and Students.


ED Education (14.4 ft.; boxes 1-36)

A secondary subject category containing materials related to education in general. The category contains letters, memoranda, educational plans and strategies, reports, and veto threats relating to education and literacy issues. A substantial amount of the material relates to the Education Summit; the development and refinement of the President's National Education Goals; the America 2000 Plan; and the issue of parental choice and vouchers in education. Senior Advisors' Veto Threats in the form of letters to Congressional committee chairs include detailed information about the reasons why the administration opposed certain legislation. Additional items in the category concern the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, including letters to and from Barbara Bush about literacy. Much of the interoffice correspondence was generated by Roger B. Porter and Charles E. M. Kolb, two of the President's senior advisors on domestic policy. The President's successive Secretaries of Education, Lauro F. Cavazos and Lamar Alexander, are also well-represented through memoranda, correspondence,and reports which document their efforts to shape and influence the President's education policy as well as public debate on education issues. Letters, petitions, and reports from school children, educators, and state and local politicians also comprise a large portion of this category and document public concern and interest in education issues.

A secondary subject category containing correspondence, memoranda, notes, and enrolled bills relating to library construction and maintenance sponsored by federal legislation. Correspondents include national library professional organizations, educators, and concerned citizens.

ED002 Scholarships - Fellowships - Grants (.54 ft.; boxes 37-39)

A secondary subject category which consists of correspondence and memoranda concerning scholarships, fellowships, and grants sponsored by the federal government. Included are letters of recommendation for students in consideration for scholarships, as well as lists of scholarship winners.

ED003 Teachers - Teaching Methods, Educational Programs (.76 ft.; boxes 39-40)

A secondary subject category including correspondence, memoranda, reports, and publications relating to teaching methodology and educational programs.
