A secondary subject category containing congressional, constituent, governmental, and staff letters and memoranda pertaining to the regulation, manufacture, and safety of various chemicals including gasoline, cloroflorocarbons (CFC's), and fertilizers. Specific issues covered in this category include the debate over the ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether) tax credit, chemical warfare, automobile fuel efficiency, ethanol, the HiTEC 3000 fuel additive, and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines affecting the chemical industry.

The bulk of the material in this category deals with research and development, marketing, and construction of computers and the regulation and governmental support of the computer industry. This category also includes copies of specific computer related legislation including the "High Performance Computing Act," the "Computer Security Improvements Act of 1990," and the "Computer Matching and Privacy Protection Amendments of 1990."

CM009 Guns and Related Products (.53 ft.; box 6-7)

A secondary subject category containing congressional, constituent and staff letters and memoranda pertaining to gun control. Specifically, this category includes legislative proposals to ban assault weapons (the Brady Bill) with many letters from constituents expressing a variety of opinions on the legislation. There is also information pertaining to debate over the 7 Day Waiting Period to purchase firearms. Of special note are over 400 letters from children asking President Bush to support the Brady Bill.

CM010 Petroleum (Gas - Oil) (4.2 ft.; boxes 8-18)

A secondary subject category containing congressional, constituent, cabinet, business, government agency, and White House staff letters, reports, policy papers, and memoranda pertaining to the gas and oil industry. The bulk of the material in this category deals with automobile fuels and the development of alternatives to gasoline including ethanol, methane, peat, coal, gasohol, ETBE (Ethyl Tertiary Butyl Ether), and methanol. There is also information on the price of fuel, fuel supplies, fuel additives such as HiTEC 3000 and MMT, and the government regulation of automotive fuel emissions. In addition, there is information on the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the Low Income Energy Assistance Initiative, the environmental cleanup associated with the Exxon Valdez oil spill, CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, reformulated gasolines, the National Energy Strategy (NES), Alaskan oil development, and correspondence concerning the EPA's then pending decision to classify oil as a hazardous waste.
