Exhibit: "The Gulag Collection"
Date(s): September 19, 2011 to October 19, 2011
Location: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum's Rotunda
Artist Nikolai Getman (1917–2004) was a prisoner in the Soviet Union's gulag labor camps in Siberia and Kolyma from 1946-1953. He survived the camps through his artistic ability to sketch propaganda materials for the authorities, and, following his release, secretly painted images of his life in internment. The Heritage Foundation has taken on the mission to exhibit his paintings in the hopes that this piece of history is not forgotten. Twenty of Getman's paintings, along with their narratives, will be displayed in the museum's rotunda. This exhibit is provided through the generosity of The Heritage Foundation.
