Youth Art Month

Date(s): March 9, 2011 to March 28, 2011
Location: George Bush Presidential Library and Museum

The Brazos Valley Art Education Association (BVAEA), in partnership with the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum’s Education Department, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Youth Art Month (YAM) by collaborating on an outdoor public art installation in the field along Barbara Bush Drive directly across from the Bush Library and Museum. The theme for this year’s YAM is “Art Shapes the World,” and on March 9 beginning at 2:15 p.m. more than 250 YAM star banners created by local art students will be installed by students and teachers and will remain on display through March 28. Each banner has been hand decorated by art students in Region VI, which extends from as far south as Brenham and as far north as Bremond, and includes numerous schools in Bryan and College Station.

Youth Art Month has been celebrated during the month of March for the last 50 years. According to the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) website(taea.org), Youth Art Month, or “YAM” as it is fondly known by art teachers, is “an annual observance held each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school art programs.”

Another symbol of the positive and productive relationship that exists between BVAEA and the Bush Library and Museum’s Education Department can also be seen in “Spotlight on Art Educators,” a rotating exhibit of art work by local art educators on display at the Bush Library and Museum. The current works on display are by the following local art teachers: Dr. Melinda Austin, Kathy Dodd, Barbara Ferreira, Christine Grafe, Kim Marshall, Renee Richards, Melissa Sculman, Janet Wilson West, and Madga Zietsman. A new exhibit will be coming in May.
