El Vaquero

Date(s): May 10, 2005
Time(s): 10:30 to 11:30 and 12:30 to 1:30
Location: Frymire Auditorium, GBPLC

This show presents the origins and development of cowboy culture in the American West. Tracing cowboy culture’s roots from the open plains of Spain to the establishment of ranching culture in the New World, the show describes the role of the Spanish/Mexican vaquero in the establishment of traditional cowboy and ranching practices in the American West. The show also contrasts the romanticized Hollywood depiction of the cowboy with the realities of the real working cowboy. Included are stories about the working vaquero’s tools and demonstrations of techniques of bullwhip cracking and trick roping.
