Bush Library Hosts Lions 4th of July Celebration
For the fourth year, the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum and Texas A&M University will host the College Station Noon Lions Club's annual Fourth of July Celebration, "I Love America." This is the 43rd year for this community event. The Museum will open at 9:30 a.m. and extend their hours until 8:00 p.m. Admission to the museum on the Fourth of July is free for everyone. Costumed characters such as George and Martha Washington, Abe Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, Lady Liberty and Uncle Sam along with many others will be mingling with the crowd to pose for photographs and answer questions about their distinguished careers. Legends of the West and The Annual Art and Essay Contest, the museum's newest exhibits, are on exhibit concurrently. The Altria Group, Inc. provides museum funding for the Fourth of July celebration.
The concession stands will open at 5:00 p.m. The live entertainment and games for the children will all begin at 6:00 p.m. There will be a live entertainment stage featuring local bands and vocalists. This year, thanks to the generous support of Britt and Kay Rice and Britt Rice Electric, the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Marcelo Bussiki will perform a concert of patriotic music. The Symphony concert will begin at 8:30 p.m.. Joining the Symphony will be the Brazos Valley Chorale performing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Soloist M.A. Sterling will join the symphony as well. The evening will culminate a spectacular fireworks display and the symphony performing the 1812 Overture. People are encouraged to come early and bring their lawn chairs and blankets.
The Don't Mess with Texas road trip will make a stop at the 4th of July festivities. Visitors can participate in a litter shoot-out and litter trivia. The Don't Mess with Texas staffers will be distributing prizes and give-aways and encouraging visitors to sign a pledge not to litter.
Due to construction on the Texas A&M campus, spectators should enter Research Park on Discovery or Research Drive off Hwy 60 (University Dr.) or use Olsen Drive to access John Kimbrough. Ample free parking will be available in Research Park. The Bush Library parking lots will be closed to all traffic except those needing handicapped parking. George Bush Drive will be closed to all traffic during the fireworks display.
Museum hours are Monday - Saturday, 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 until 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for students, $3.50 for senior citizens 62+ and groups of 20 or more with reservations.
