2003 Art and Essay Contest Winners
The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum is proud to display the winning entries from the 4th annual Art and Essay Contest.
In January the museum's education department mailed hundreds of invitations to regional teachers. Over three hundred students from across the Brazos Valley answered the call for artwork submissions. Inspired by the theme "Stripes and Stars," the young artists sketched, sculpted, and painted their interpretation of this American icon. Essayists were given the topic "American Ideals and Practices" which inspired a flurry of entries based on our free society. The judges were impressed by not only the quantity of entries, but the quality as well. This year's contest drew twice as many entries as last year.
On May 8, 2003, the students who received honorable mention, second place, and first place awards were honored in a ceremony highlighting their accomplishments. First place essay winners received a gift certificate provided by Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Students who placed first in the art category received a gift certificate from Utrecht Art Supply in Houston. The contest is underwritten by Wells Fargo Bank.
The exhibit will be on display from May 1, 2003 through August 3, 2003. Museum hours are Monday - Saturday, 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00 until 5:00 p.m. Museum admission is $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for students, $3.50 for senior citizens 62+ and groups of 20 or more with reservations.
