From the steps of the Jefferson Memorial, producer Norman Lear announced today the launch of the Declaration of Independence Road Trip, a non-profit, nonpartisan project that will take an original copy of the Declaration of Independence on a three-and-a-half year, cross-country tour. Lear acquired a Dunlap broadside print of the Declaration in June 2000 with the goal of bringing the "People's Document" directly to Americans--especially young people-- to inspire them to participate in civic activism, to exercise their rights, and above all, to vote. As the Road Trip travels to cities and towns across the United States, it will creatively combine elements of education, entertainment, and community outreach activities, featuring multimedia exhibitions, live theatrical shows, major young talent and musical performances.
