Walter Webb, an internationally famed historian and philosopher of history, in 1931 published The Great Plains, which is recognized as a classic of historical interpretation. As a teacher at the University of Texas at Austin, he was editor of an encyclopedia of Texas history, published in 1952 as The Handbook of Texas and since updated. Among Webb’s other works are The Texas Rangers: A Century of Frontier Defense and The Great Frontier, a rethinking of the forces involved in the United States’ westward expansion.
