To many he was the best all-around football player ever. Doak Walker was a star at Southern Methodist University, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1948. In six seasons with the Detroit Lions, he led them to two world championships. He’s a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, a three-time all-American and, to many friends, a good guy. A Chronicle sportswriter called him “a breathtaking athlete who excelled at every aspect of football as well as almost every other sport.” Walker retired from the NFL with 534 points on 34 touchdowns, 183 extra points and 49 field goals.
