In 1971 Willie Velasquez founded the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, which played a key role in increasing the numbers of Hispanic voters during the ensuing two decades. Velasquez also helped found La Raza Unida party but eventually parted company with it. He taught Southwestern politics at Harvard University. His name became synonymous with the phrase “Su voto es su voz” (your vote is your voice).
