Born in Dallas in poverty, Lee Trevino learned to play golf in the Marine Corps. Despite his unconventional style, he won three of golf’s biggest championships in 1971: the U.S. Open, the Canadian Open and the British Open. In 1975, however, he was struck by lightning and seriously injured. Trevino made a comeback, but adjustments in his playing style were necessary. In 1979 he again won the Canadian Open, and in 1984 he won the U.S. PGA Championship at age 44.
