In 1956 Darrell Royal came to the University of Texas as head football coach. Twenty years later when, in his words, he “set down his bucket,” Royal’s teams had won three national championships, posted a 167-47-5 record and won 11 Cotton Bowl appearances. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. In 1996 the University of Texas at Austin stadium was renamed Darrel K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
