Multimedia artist Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur and studied pharmacy briefly at the University of Texas at Austin. He later studied in France and by the mid-1950s was making the assemblage and collage works that brought him fame. He played an important role in the transition from Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art. In the 1970s he began working with snippets from magazines blended with fabric, metal and glass mingled with miscellaneous objects.
