Opinion, however, about Katherine Anne Porter’s short stories is virtually undivided: Most of them are beyond praise. Born near Brownwood, Porter spent most of her life in places far from her native state, but many of her best works are set in Texas. One of her most esteemed works, Pale Horse, Pale Rider, was written in her sister’s home in Houston Heights.
