The most decorated combat soldier in U.S. history, Audie Murphy was born in Kingston in Hunt County. During World War II Murphy won every major combat decoration, including the Medal of Honor for killing or wounding about 50 Germans in combat in France. After the war Murphy had a successful career in motion pictures. He starred in the movie version of his best-selling book To Hell and Back. Killed in an air crash, Murphy was buried at Arlington National Cemetery near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
