A transplanted Tennessean living in El Paso, Cormac McCarthy has produced novels that have won a National Book Award and other laurels and have been favorably compared with the works of Herman Melville and William Faulkner. Although his Border Trilogy has earned widespread acclaim, some critics consider an earlier novel about scalp-hunters in 19th-century Mexico, Blood Meridian, his finest work.
