A native of Alabama, track-and-field athlete Carl Lewis trained at the University of Houston. He won nine gold medals at Olympic games in 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996, including four straight gold medals in the long jump. That made Lewis the second competitor in history of the Olympics to win the same event in four consecutive Olympic games. Lewis won the 1988 100-meter-dash medal when Ben Johnson, a Canadian, was disqualified for using steroids. In 1985, Lewis was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. He retired from competition in 1997.
