President Kennedy's Oval Office features the famous Resolute desk. This desk had, in another life, sailed the seas. In 1852, the British barque-rigged ship The Resolute was sent to find missing Arctic explorers, but it was abandoned by its crew. American whalers later discovered the ship, and it was purchased, fitted, and restored by the American government and sent to Queen Victoria as a gift from the president and the American people. When the ship was finally broken up, her timbers were carved into this elaborate desk, which was presented to President Rutherford Hayes by Queen Victoria in 1879 as "a memorial of the courtesy and loving kindness which dictated the offer of the gift of the RESOLUTE. President Kennedy cherished this old desk.
