For nearly half a century Horton Foote has written stage dramas, television plays and screenplays. He has won Oscars for his scripts for To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies. A native of Wharton, Foote in his writing has drawn on the stories and reminiscences of his Texas relatives and forebears. His drama The Trip to Bountiful, starring Geraldine Page in an Oscar-winning film performance, demonstrated Foote’s power to portray the essence of character and to evoke a sense of the Texas experience.
