Michael DeBakey probably is the best-known physician in Texas. A pioneer in development of the artificial heart, he also led in building Baylor College of Medicine in to one of the nation’s great medical training and research institutions. His mastery attracted to Houston scores of famous patients, among them the Duke of Windsor, the Shah of Iran, King Hussein of Jordan and Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. DeBakey was the first to use a heart pump successfully in a patient. A stern, caustic taskmaster, DeBakey trained hundreds of cardiovascular surgeons. He served as president and chancellor of the Baylor medical school.
