Called the Balenciaga of food and the best cook in Texas, Helen Corbitt was born in New York but spent nearly 40 years in the Lone Star State, educating many Texans in the delights of gourmet cooking. After a stint at the University of Texas at Austin, Corbitt worked at the Houston Country Club and at Joske’s. In 1955 she joined Neiman-Marcus in Dallas, where the Zodiac Room became the acme of Texas sophistication. Corbitt authored numerous cookbooks and was the first woman to win the Golden Plate Award, the highest honor in the food business.
