A founder of the international Anderson, Clayton & Co. cotton firm, Will Clayton also was assistant and later undersecretary of state under Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. He was a principal architect of the European Recovery Program, known as the Marshall Plan. With his wife, Susan Vaughn Clayton, he contributed to numerous charitable causes, including the building of a low-cost housing project in Houston, which was named Clayton Homes in their honor.
