In 1914 Herman Brown received 18 mules for back wages and went into the building business. His firm, Brown and Root Inc., with headquarters in Houston, got its big break with the contract to build Marshall Ford Dam on the Colorado River. With his brother George, Herman Brown built dams, bridges, roads, petrochemical plants, Rice University stadium and the Johnson Manned Spacecraft Center. In 1962 the Halliburton Co. of Dallas bought Brown and Root.
