Being the wife of a former President and the mother to the current one certainly distinguishes Barbara Bush as unique. However, “America’s Grandmother” possesses her own personal special-ness, which is seen in her longtime love of education, specifically reading and literacy. During her husband’s vice presidential years, Mrs. Bush chose literacy as her focus and was soon involved with many like-minded groups, including the National Advisory Council of Literacy Volunteers of America, Laubauch Literacy Volunteers, and the Advisory Council of Reading is Fundamental, among others. Upon becoming First Lady, she united her passion for reading with her love of family and launched the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, whose mission is to establish literacy as a value in every family in America. Mrs. Bush believes that “if every man, woman, and child in America could read, write, and comprehend, we would be much closer to solving many of our nation’s serious problems.”
