The Oval Office in the West Wing was inspired by this room, the Blue Room. Thomas Jefferson would stand in the exact center of the Blue Room to shake hands with visitors. President Lincoln stood inside the Blue Room door, and sometimes the crowds wanting to shake his hand were so long they extended out the north entrance and down the street. Many presidents and first ladies have received guests in the Blue Room, the unparalleled and preeminent reception room in the White House.
