Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States (b. 1924). Carter was welcomed as a fresh face in Washington when elected President in 1976. The career of the introspective former naval officer, Georgia governor, and businessman had been untainted by the turmoil that brought down the Nixon administration. A concern for human rights around the world dominated his foreign policy. In 1980, Carter became the 9th incumbent President to lose a bid for a second term. Artifacts include: a soccer ball from Krakow, Poland; a cowboy hat from the 1980 Winter Olympics belonging to skier Andy Mill; a set of brass bocce balls; and a softball and soccerball autographed to Amy Carter.
