On October 15, 1793, Dorothy Hancock sent his letter, along with the box containing her husband's Revolutionary War sash, to John Boyle as a gift. After the American Revolution Hancock served as Governor of Massachusetts, and Boyle had been his military aid. When Hancock died his widow sent the crimson silk accessory as a keepsake in acknowledgement of the Boyle's faithful service.
