Biblia, das ist die ganze Gottliche Heilige Schrift, Alten und Neuen Testaments.... The German translation of scripture by Martin Luther was published in Germantown, Pennsylvania by Christopher Saur, in 1776. Its nickname, "The Gun-wad Bible," came from the fact that sometimes this version of scripture were torn apart, serving as paper for cartridges. Such expedients were necessary because Americans lacked many resources needed to fight the war. Because many of this particular edition were used for as gun wadding, surviving examples of the 1776 Saur Bible are rare.
