The George Bush Presidential Library enthusiastically invites you to join us in celebrating the history of the Bryan - College Station area by supporting "Locomotives on Parade!"
"Locomotives on Parade!" serves not only as an opportunity to join ranks with fellow contributors in support of our upcoming exhibit, "Trains: Tracks of the Iron Horse;" it also provides the creative canvas for an exciting public art project designed to involve our entire community.
What Is the Project?
Similar projects, such as "Chicago's Cows on Parade" and "Gallopalooza: Louisville's Sidewalk Derby," are among those which have successfully inspired a craze for public art projects across America in recent years. The George Bush Presidential Library is bringing this spirited idea to the Bryan-College Station region with "Locomotives on the Parade!"
Who Sponsors the Locomotives?
Area philanthropists sponsor three-dimensional fiberglass models shaped as local icons; in honor of College Station's local railroad history, we have chosen six-foot steam engine locomotives specially designed to represent the area. Bronze plaques at the base of each locomotive will tell who sponsored and decorated the train.
Who Decorates the Locomotives?
Once sponsored, the trains are decorated by celebrated artists from the community at the direction of the sponsors and placed on proud display around the city, generating traffic to sponsoring businesses and attracting keen interest for their whimsical and inventive artwork.
What Happens to the Locomotives?
At the end of the project, the locomotives will make their way to the Library, and everyone who has been captivated by the particularly unique parade of trains will have an opportunity to bid on their favorite locomotive at a spectacular auction event in September. Even after the project has been completed, the lasting sense of community spirit and local pride will live on in the spirited images of steam engine locomotives that remain around town.
Who Does the Project Benefit?
In addition to providing the area with a candid spectacle of art as well as the chance to flex their creative muscles, the project helps fundraise for the Library's ongoing art exhibits. By participating in the project, you are personally helping to maintain the excellent tradition of these public exhibits and enabling the George Bush Presidential Library to continue in serving the community.
