Barbara Bush: An Extraordinary Journey

April 17, 2004 to December 31, 2004

For the first time ever the museum will feature an exhibit dedicated solely to former First Lady Barbara Bush. Barbara Bush: An Extraordinary Journey opens April 17. The new exhibit will feature an in-depth look at the life of the former first lady.

Photographs, memorabilia and personal items from the museum's collections will tell the story of the journey of a schoolgirl from Rye, New York to first lady of the land. The exhibit explores Mrs. Bush's role as partner of a husband-on-the-move, mother, author, volunteer, literacy advocate, photographer and first lady. Twenty-two of Mrs. Bush's gowns, her wedding dress and a reproduction of her inaugural gown are included in the exhibit.

Barbara Bush: An Extraordinary Journey took Museum Curator, Patricia Burchfield and her staff more than a year to plan, design and create in the Museum's Ansary Gallery of American History. Additionally, more than one-thousand hours have gone to researching the library's photo and textual archives. "She is a remarkable lady, we really explored our extensive collection to find documents, artifacts and photos that tell the story of Barbara Bush," commented Patricia Burchfield. "We also featured items that had never been displayed in the museum before" Ms. Burchfield added.

Three new audio-visual components have been created especially for this exhibit. The first is a sixteen minute film narrated by Barbara Bush that tells the story of her life, the second is a captioned video presentation of slides Mrs. Bush photographed during her stay in China and the third is a collection of images from the vice-presidential era also narrated by Mrs. Bush.
